Gateway to the Panhandle Museum and Library

was established in April, 1975. Its purpose was to establish a community library and a museum to preserve for future generations, artifacts, area historical events, and promote the history and preservation of the Gate community. Finances were raised for the project by donations, a musical fund raiser and the women served dinners at farm sales. Thirty-three men moved and set the old MKT depot on a new foundation. After 6,500 donated man hours of hard labor the building was refurbished.
- We were honored to receive Oklahoma Bicentennial award in 1976.
-In the early 1980’s an addition was added to house our growing library and artifact displays.
- When Gate school closed in 1992 we attained the classrooms building for school artifacts and community use.
- Two years ago a historical building on main street , needing to be refurbished, was donated to us. This project is being paid for by donations and fund raising projects.

A community artist painted life size figures and a train mural at the depot and the sign in front was made by a young man using railroad spikes from the MKT railroad.

The Town of Gate

The Gate City town site was established in 1883, however, it was 1886 before the proposed application was approved. With the coming of the rail road in 1912, the whole town, building and all, were loaded on wagons and moved to it's present site. Today Gate has a population of about 112. Main street is only 3 blocks long, however travelers are in for quite a treat. A community artist painted life size figures and a train mural at the depot and from there the project expanded. Community artists have painted murals on the main street buildings, and added fences depicting early day community living.

Gate is now a beautiful artistic town .
